Tony Banovich’s name holds weight in the running world. He was the Race Director for the Missoula Marathon and Executive Director of the nonprofit Run Wild Missoula. He had many titles such as coach, event volunteer, “fastest guy in Montana,” and so many more. Involved in the running community for over three decades, Banovich’s love of running and the running community shined through and spilled over into the hearts of runners everywhere. I never had the honor of meeting him or running the Missoula Marathon, but he sounds like he was such an encouraging, kind soul.
Sadly, in 2010, he received a viral cardiomyopathy diagnosis that claimed his life on October 14, 2020.
In his honor, several running-industry greats (BibRave, Event Southwest, and the Louisville Running Company) created a virtual event for all levels—The Tony Banovich Roads, Tracks, and Trails Memorial Run presented by AfterShokz. (Have I told you lately how much I love AfterShokz?! Check out my reviews here and here for various models.)
Walk or run 4.35 miles any time between November 9 and December 11, 2020 (ending at 11:59 p.m. Mountain time). I love that the title of this virtual race is all-inclusive. No matter where you run or walk, I’d like to think that Banovich would have wanted you to enjoy the physical activity and comradery.
Why 4.35 miles? If you’re like me, I’m a stickler for round numbers/miles. Hubs laughs at me when I want to run or bike just a little more to make it to the next round number. But 4.35 is a very significant number. It’s the average distance of Banovich’s 1,731-day run streak. Holy moly! I’m on Day 351, so 1,731 days is beyond my comprehension!
You can register any time between November 9 and December 11, 2020. You have until December 31, 2020 to run or walk your virtual race.
You’ll receive the following after you register:
- A commemorative pin donated by Ashworth Awards, embossed with Banovich’s signature email send-off , “See you on the roads, tracks, and trails.”
- A special t-shirt if you choose to add that on to your registration
Hubs has been doing the Couch to 5K program, so perhaps I can rope him and our daughter into joining me! “See you on the roads, tracks and trails,” as Tony would say!
