Product Review: Aftershokz Trekz Air

Disclaimer: I received a pair of AfterShokz Trekz Air to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out to review, find, and write race reviews!

A few years ago I would often see a brand called AfterShokz pop up on my social media feed, touting itself as the “bone-conduction” wireless headphones brand. At the time I was so blissfully naive with my wired headphones and don’t-bother-me-I’m-fine-with-the-$20-cheapo-headphones-that-I-have attitude, that I filed the notion in the “meh-someday-maybe” folder in my brain.

You see, I had gone through countless pairs of cheap, wired headphones over the years. I sweat like a wilder beast, so I always thought that using them while running and sweating profusely just shorted out the wires or something. Science/tech isn’t necessarily my strong suit, runner friends. Nor are my sweat glands.

I clearly just thought that a pair of nicer, more expensive headphones wasn’t in the cards for me. Hubs did graciously buy me a different brand of wireless headphones back in 2018 (after he probably got sick of my complaining about countless pairs of dead headphones piled up on our counter), but they didn’t work out so well as you can read in this race recap.

After my string of bad-luck headphones, I was wicked excited to be able to test a pair of these fabled AfterShokz with some fellow BibRave Pros.

Queue the freakin’ heavens opening up, folks! These headphones are truly a miracle!

Here I am unboxing this miracle tech with a crazy child in the background:

So why do I love the AfterShokz Trekz Air so much? Here are my top three reasons:

  1. FIT: They are so lightweight. In fact, they are 20 percent lighter than the Trekz Titanium. As Rainbow Dash might say, “It needs to be about 20% cooler.” And they are!

Seriously though, I don’t even notice that I have them on. They’re that comfortable. They stay put while resting on my ears, don’t bounce an ounce, and are flexible enough that if a small child got a hold of them, they likely wouldn’t break! (But if they did, there’s a two-year warranty!)

2. FUNCTION: I really dislike how products’ batteries always seem to drain quickly. I know, I know, it’s just the way it is with some products, but not with the Trekz Air! I am able to run for hours on end without worrying about these babies dying. I’ve gone so long as nearly eight—yes EIGHT–hours of use without having to re-charge them. I use these headphones while running (duh), biking, cleaning the house, folding laundry, and even working from home. They make those mundane household chores fly by so quickly. Plus the buttons on the headphones are so simple that our six-year-old daughter could probably figure them out on her own.

3. SAFETY: I run alone more often than not, and I take my safety seriously. I carry pepper spray with me, but that won’t help me if I don’t hear an attacker before I see one, right?! I love that there is literally nothing in my ears while using these headphones, so I can hear my surroundings and run safely while still hearing crystal-clear podcasts, music, or audio books. The sound quality is out of this world, too, with “a wide dynamic range and rich bass,” which I can’t explain except to say that everything sounds better with these puppies on.

Hubs, who is not a runner, was so intrigued by my pair, that we got him his own! He said, “I love using the Trekz Air while biking. I’m able to still hear the traffic, pedestrians, and podcasts or music clearly. I also use them while cleaning, cooking, and while working, because I can still hear my co-workers and phone while listening to audio books.” He might use them more than I do some days!
