As we roll into December each year, I tend to think about my upcoming goals for the New Year. I think I’m going to call 2020 my Year of Joy (hash tag that sh*t now, folks! #2020YearofJoy).

In 2019, I did a fairly good job of culling down responsibilities that were above and beyond what I could actually handle and do with integrity. I’m an Upholder, so I’ll say yes to everything under the sun to please the ones I love. I’m slowly learning that that’s just not sustainable, and that it’s actually OK to say no in the name of self-care.

But I digress. I also say that 2020 will be my Year of Joy, because I was just diagnosed with Hallux Rigidus in both feet. I was having some pain on the outer-right side of my right foot for a few weeks. I finally broke down and went to a local podiatrist who suggested trying an ankle compression sleeve, an anti-inflammatory for two weeks, and to give running a rest for a week. During that appointment, the nurse mentioned that I had a bunion on my right foot, but the podiatrist didn’t really mention it.

Well, I had a follow-up appointment with my podiatrist recently. What I thought was bunion pain (like big-toe-knuckle pain) on the right foot was getting much worse. He took a look at it again, and he diagnosed it as Hallux Rigidus—a disorder of the joint located at the base of the big toe. It causes pain and stiffness in the joint, and with time, it gets increasingly harder to bend the toe.

He said it was surprising that I’ve run so far/long with it like this. He suggested that I get shoes with rigid soles in them and that I should think about finding some other sport to do in the next few years. If I continue to run, it might really debilitate my foot to the point where I’ll have pain all the time. NOT what I wanted to hear.

Positive Spin

However, I’ve talked to some of my amazing runner friends who have this who are actively running still. I’m going to a second podiatrist in February, and friends have suggested getting inserts and possibly switching my shoes to Hokas. So I feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel, and this isn’t a death sentence!

With that being said, I’m going to want to step up my cross-training activities in 2020. That’s why I’ve signed up for the 465 Virtual Challenge! It’s a virtual challenge where you can run, walk, cycle, swim—whatever activity where you can track miles works just fine! It’s a great way to stay motivated during the winter months, and you can do it at your pace with whatever activity you love the most!

The challenge is completing 53 miles between January 1, 2020 and February 29, 2020. I love the fact that it’s not complicated, and you can choose however you want to complete those 53 miles.

53 Miles

So why 53 miles total? This is a pretty nifty fact: Starting at I-65 on the south side, Route 465 is a 53-mile loop around Indianapolis.
