The Delaware Marathon Running Festival really does have it all! Runners can choose from the full marathon distance, the half marathon distance, a 4-person relay, a 5K, a Kids Fun Run, or the Big Freakin’ Deal Challenge.
I’ll be running the full this year, which is on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 7 a.m. EST, and I couldn’t be more excited! The 2019 marathon field will be capped at 1,000 runners, with a total of 3,000 runners in all events. Online registration will close on April 26, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. EST or earlier if the field is filled.
One major change this year is that, according to the site, “The 2019 Delaware Marathon will include a significant route update! We are finalizing some course changes that will affect the full marathon and team relay courses. Based on runner feedback from last year we’ve eliminated the old two-loop marathon course. The marathon course will continue to run through some of the most scenic parts of downtown Wilmington but the changes will unify the full, half and team relay courses so everyone uses the same routes for the first 13 miles. There will be no significant changes to the half marathon course.”
The half marathon option is also the same date and time as the full version.
The half marathon field will be capped at 1500 runners. The 2019 full marathon and half marathon courses will have a few minor changes this year due to construction along the Riverfront passed the St. Francis Healthcare building. Both courses will be re-certified.
I did the 4-person relay option back in 2014. This year, each member of the team must be at least 16 years of age and, as a team, be able to complete the 26.2 mile course in 6 hours (13:44 min/mile pace). The team relay marathon field will be capped at 300 teams. The relay occurs at the same date and time as the full and half.
The Team Captain may register his or her team, prepay the combined team entry fee, and return later to complete team information. Registering early is a great way to ensure your team gets into the Delaware Relay Marathon, as this event sells out first!
I like the 4-person relay option, because you don’t have as much pressure of running a longer distance, but you can still experience the race course.
This year, the 5K will take place on Sunday, April 28 at 7:30 a.m. EST.
The 5k field will be limited to 500 participants.
Kids Fun Run
The Kids Fun Run will be the same day as the full, half, 5K, and relay but at 9:30 am. EST.
It is open to all children 12 and under. There are two age groups: 7 and under (Red Division, approx. .1 mile) and 8–12 (Blue Division, aprox .2 mile). The two age groups will run different lengths with all participants crossing the same finish line as the marathoners.
Participants will cross the same finish line as the adult participants. Upon completion of the race, participants corralled in a holding area at the finish. Parents are asked to claim their child here & present the numbered stub (which is attached to their child’s bib).
All participants are invited to go directly to the Kids Zone to receive their finisher’s medal. In addition, water, Gatorade, and snacks will be available in the Fun Zone!
The BFD is a Spring Race Challenge for those who want to prove that they are a Big Freakin’ Deal. Runners must complete any race distance at the Delaware Running Festival (April 28, 2019), Frederick Running Festival (May 4–5, 2019) and the Baltimore 10-Miler (June 1, 2019).
Runners who complete all three races get an extra Big Freakin’ Medal to add to their collection. In addition, those who register for the BFD Challenge as a bundle save up to $5 per race. That’s $15 off when you sign up as a bundle!
Phew, that’s a lot of race options! As always, you can use code DelawareRave19 to get 10% off registration!
